A ₹15.50-crore initiative is on the verge of revolutionizing uphill access in Shimla, providing relief to tourists, senior citizens, and local residents from the challenging ascent, all while offering breathtaking views of the Queen of Hills.
In Shimla, visitors will soon find it easier to reach the famous Ridge from Lakkar Bazaar, thanks to a new lift and funicular system that is nearing completion. The Shimla Municipal Corporation aims to unveil this eagerly awaited project by November 30.
For many years, the steep path connecting Lakkar Bazaar to the Ridge has posed a significant challenge for both tourists and locals. The new transport system is designed to alleviate this difficulty, particularly for senior citizens and those with mobility issues.
With an estimated investment of ₹15.50 crore, the project features a combined lift and funicular system. Passengers will first ascend via the lift to a midway point before boarding a funicular trolley that will take them to the Ridge. The trolley is anticipated to hold around eight to ten passengers, depending on final technical specifications.
Shimla's Mayor, Surender Chauhan, announced that the project is in its final phase, with construction nearly complete. Trial operations and safety checks are currently in progress and are expected to conclude within the next five to ten days, paving the way for public access.
A New Attraction for Shimla's Visitors
In addition to facilitating easier transport, this project is poised to become a new attraction for tourists. The ride will allow visitors to take in Shimla's stunning landscapes from an elevated perspective, showcasing the surrounding hills and lush greenery.
Plans also include a designated selfie point and viewing areas, providing tourists with opportunities to capture memorable moments during their visit.
For local residents, especially the elderly, this facility will serve as a practical alternative to the strenuous climb. Families with children and those who find steep paths challenging will also benefit significantly.
Revamping the Old Bus Stand and New Shops
The ₹15.50-crore project encompasses more than just the transport system. It also involves renovating the old bus stand at Lakkar Bazaar and constructing approximately 15 to 18 new shops, enhancing the area's appearance and commercial viability.
This initiative is a collaborative effort between the Shimla Municipal Corporation and the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation (HPTDC), both of which will be involved in its management.
Another Lift Planned Near Auckland House
In a separate effort to enhance urban mobility, the Municipal Corporation is working on a lift facility near Auckland House, adjacent to the Oak Tunnel. The target completion date for this project is set for March 30-31, 2027. This facility aims to improve accessibility and convenience for travelers in the area.
Through these initiatives, Shimla is striving to enhance pedestrian connectivity and make its popular tourist spots more accessible. The Lakkar Bazaar-Ridge funicular is expected to be a valuable addition to the city's tourism infrastructure, benefiting both visitors and residents alike.
