Nawazuddin Siddiqui on Racism and Beauty Standards
In his discussion, Nawazuddin acknowledged his experiences with racism, although he felt accepted within the industry. He elaborated on the selective nature of racism, stating, "When a cockroach is killed, people applaud, but when a butterfly is harmed, they question it. This selectivity exists in many areas, including racism. It's crucial that we don't let others dictate beauty standards; let individuals make that choice themselves," he remarked in Hindi.
Further explaining his perspective, he pointed out that an actress deemed 'sawli' (dark-skinned) is often viewed as average in India, yet she may be considered exotic abroad. He emphasized that societal perceptions shouldn't dictate casting decisions, as stories are typically written with a bias towards fair-skinned characters. "Many individuals are grappling with this issue," he added. He also expressed admiration for Smita Patil, stating, "I have never seen anyone more beautiful than her. The camera captures beauty differently, and it should not judge.
