Mumbai Indians Restructure Support Staff Ahead of IPL 2027
Major Changes in Mumbai Indians' Coaching Team
New Delhi. As the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 approaches, the Mumbai Indians (MI), who have clinched the championship title five times, are undergoing significant changes in their support staff. The franchise has parted ways with their esteemed bowling coach, Lasith Malinga. Alongside Malinga, bowling coach Paras Mhambrey and fielding coach Carl Hopkinson have also been released from their roles.
Previously, the Mumbai Indians appointed Kieron Pollard as the new head coach, succeeding Mahela Jayawardene.
Lasith Malinga has been one of the most successful and beloved players in the history of the Mumbai Indians. Between 2009 and 2019, he played 122 IPL matches for MI, taking 170 wickets and playing a crucial role in securing four IPL titles for the team. Malinga's mentorship was instrumental in shaping Jasprit Bumrah into one of the world's leading yorker specialists. The franchise acknowledged Malinga's contributions, stating that his passion, dedication, and legacy will always be an integral part of MI.
Paras Mhambrey, who was previously the bowling coach for the Indian team that won the 2024 T20 World Cup, joined the Mumbai Indians afterward, while Carl Hopkinson became part of the team during the 2025 season. Notably, the Mumbai Indians dominated the IPL from 2013 to 2020, winning the trophy five times. However, from 2021 to 2026, the team has struggled, failing to reach the finals and finishing at the bottom of the points table twice. This disappointing performance has prompted the franchise to reorganize its entire coaching setup ahead of the new season.
