Moushumi Chatterjee Dismisses Retirement Rumors, Open to Meaningful Roles
Moushumi Chatterjee Clarifies Her Career Plans
Moushumi Chatterjee has addressed the recent rumors regarding her retirement from acting. The esteemed actress, known for her contributions to both Hindi and Bengali cinema, has confirmed that she has no intention of stepping away from the industry. Instead, she is eager to consider new projects that are meaningful and worthwhile. This clarification comes in response to speculation suggesting that her departure was due to age or health concerns, which she has firmly denied.
Moushumi Chatterjee Questions Retirement Claims
In response to the swirling rumors, Moushumi Chatterjee questioned the source of these claims, asserting her capability to continue working. In an interview with Mid-Day, she expressed, "Who said I am retiring? I am selective about the projects I choose at this stage of my career. If a role aligns with my expectations and standards, I am very much open to it. Please disregard any misinformation." The 78-year-old actress emphasized her readiness to engage in work that meets her criteria.
Chatterjee mentioned that her daughter Meghaa now assists in managing her professional engagements and evaluates potential opportunities for her. She expressed a desire to participate in projects that have strong narratives and roles that reflect her extensive experience, prioritizing quality over quantity in her choices.
Impact of Personal Loss on Her Career
Moushumi Chatterjee also shared insights into her absence from the screen in recent years, revealing that the passing of her elder daughter, Payal, in 2019 profoundly affected her. This loss led her to take a step back from her regular work commitments as she focused on healing and grieving, which some may have interpreted as retirement. "I wasn't actively shooting because I was mourning my daughter. This gap in my career was not a deliberate choice to leave the industry but rather a necessary period of recovery during a challenging time," she explained.
Seeking Meaningful Roles
Chatterjee, who is enthusiastic about returning to acting, expressed her disinterest in roles that lack creative challenges. She aims to portray characters that are substantial and have depth, rather than superficial roles. "I have never sought work by visiting anyone's office. I believe that opportunities will come my way," she stated. "I cannot accept just any role, such as a mother simply saying, 'Beta aa jaao, khana khaa lo'. I aspire to take on roles that offer at least a couple of impactful scenes and resonate with my age." She expressed a keen interest in exploring morally complex characters, which she believes would allow her to showcase her versatility as an actress. Despite her limited appearances in recent years, Chatterjee has remained active in the industry through Bengali projects, commercials, and guest appearances on popular shows. Her last notable Hindi film was Piku.
