Mortal Kombat II: Will It Break Box Office Records Upon Release?
Anticipation Builds for Mortal Kombat II
Fans of martial arts action are buzzing with excitement as Mortal Kombat II is set to hit U.S. theaters on May 8, 2026. To outdo the original 1995 film's box office success, the sequel featuring Karl Urban must rake in at least $122.2 million globally. Furthermore, to surpass the earnings of the 2021 reboot, it needs to gross over $84.4 million worldwide. With a production budget estimated at $68 million, Mortal Kombat II must achieve around $170 million in total earnings to break even, following the widely accepted 2.5x multiplier rule.
As the premiere date draws nearer, the film's ability to meet these financial benchmarks remains in question. For perspective, Mortal Kombat II must earn a minimum of $99.4 million globally to outpace Jean-Claude Van Damme’s 1994 classic, Street Fighter, according to Box Office Mojo.
Recent projections from Box Office Pro indicate that the Warner Bros. film could earn between $45 million and $55 million during its opening weekend in the U.S. If it lands on the lower end with $45 million, it may be compared to the 2021 reboot, which debuted at $23.3 million and ultimately grossed $42.3 million in North America, reflecting a domestic multiplier of 1.81x.
If Mortal Kombat II follows a similar trajectory, it could wrap up its domestic run with around $82 million. Additionally, strong international support could help it exceed Street Fighter’s $99.4 million global earnings. However, these estimates are preliminary and will be adjusted as the release date approaches.
Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II is anticipated to delve into the rivalry between Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, and other beloved characters as they band together to face Shao Kahn and his powerful warriors. The film boasts a diverse ensemble cast, including Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Tati Gabrielle, among others.
