Mortal Kombat II: Will It Break Box Office Records in 2026?
Mortal Kombat II Set for Theatrical Release
The highly anticipated martial arts fantasy action film, Mortal Kombat II, starring Karl Urban, is scheduled to premiere in U.S. theaters on May 8, 2026. This film represents the fourth chapter in the live-action Mortal Kombat saga, drawing inspiration from the immensely popular video game series. The original film released in 1995 remains the top-grossing installment, raking in $122.2 million worldwide, as reported by Box Office Mojo. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see if this new entry can surpass that impressive figure at the box office.
With a production budget estimated at $68 million, Mortal Kombat II will need to earn around $170 million to be considered profitable, adhering to the industry standard of a 2.5 times return on investment. As excitement builds, industry experts are closely monitoring whether the film can achieve this crucial financial target, especially when compared to other successful martial arts films.
The latest installment in the Karate Kid series, Karate Kid: Legends (2025), featuring Jackie Chan and Ralph Macchio, grossed $117.1 million globally. However, the highest-grossing film in that franchise remains the 2010 remake, which starred Jaden Smith and Jackie Chan, earning a remarkable $359.1 million worldwide. For Mortal Kombat II to outdo this record, it must secure at least $359.1 million in total box office earnings.
Current projections indicate that Mortal Kombat II could earn between $40 million and $50 million during its opening weekend in the domestic market. In comparison, The Karate Kid (2010) debuted with $55.7 million and ultimately grossed $176.6 million in North America, achieving a multiplier of approximately 3.17x. If Mortal Kombat II follows a similar path, it might conclude with a domestic total ranging from $127 million to $159 million.
Despite these optimistic forecasts, surpassing the global total of The Karate Kid (2010) may be a daunting task for Mortal Kombat II. Directed by Simon McQuoid, the film is expected to focus on Johnny Cage, portrayed by Urban, along with other fan-favorite characters as they battle against Shao Kahn and his powerful warriors. The cast also features Adeline Rudolph, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Mehcad Brooks, and Tati Gabrielle, among others. The film's true box office performance will become evident after its release in May.
