Mortal Kombat II's Box Office Performance

The sequel, Mortal Kombat II, is making waves at the North American box office, emerging as a strong contender to become the highest-grossing film in the franchise's history. It has already outperformed both the 2021 reboot and the 1997 original, now setting its sights on the first Mortal Kombat film, which currently holds the top-grossing title. However, to achieve this milestone, Mortal Kombat II must significantly increase its earnings.

Despite facing tough competition, the film has shown remarkable box office success. On its first Wednesday, it generated $2 million, marking the highest Wednesday earnings for any fighting game adaptation. However, it did see a 46.2% drop from its initial discounted Tuesday earnings. In just six days, featuring Karl Urban, the film has garnered a domestic total of $46.9 million and is poised to cross the $50 million threshold soon.

The original Mortal Kombat, which debuted in 1995, holds the record for the highest domestic gross in the series, totaling $70.4 million according to Box Office Mojo. Mortal Kombat II is currently less than $24 million shy of surpassing this figure, necessitating a 50.1% increase in its earnings to claim the title of the franchise's top-grossing film in North America.

Internationally, Mortal Kombat II has also performed admirably, raking in $28.2 million during its opening weekend. When combined with its domestic earnings, the film's global total currently stands at $75.16 million. Analysts are optimistic that it will reach the $100 million mark worldwide, reinforcing its potential as a blockbuster within the franchise.

Directed by Simon McQuoid, Mortal Kombat II follows Johnny Cage, a martial arts actor recruited by the Thunder god Raiden and Sonya Blade to join Earthrealm fighters in a tournament against Outworld warriors, aided by Edenian princess Kitana. Released on May 8, the film continues to draw audiences and create excitement in the box office arena.
