Morgan Freeman's Musical Journey Begins

Oscar-winning actor Morgan Freeman is poised to make his debut in the music industry with his upcoming album, titled 'Morgan Freeman's Symphonic Blues Experience,' which is set to launch on August 7 under Decca Records. At 89 years old, Freeman not only serves as the producer but also as the narrator for this project. The announcement came on Friday, coinciding with the release of the album's first single, 'Death Letter Blues,' which honors Juneteenth. This venture marks a significant milestone for Freeman, who has long held a passion for the blues genre.

The album features 12 tracks designed to take listeners on a cinematic exploration of a century's worth of blues music. Collaborations include notable artists such as Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, and Shemekia Copeland, along with the Chineke! Orchestra. Freeman shared his personal connection to the blues, recalling, "I first heard the blues on my grandmother's porch in the Mississippi Delta, and it has stayed with me ever since." This personal narrative adds depth to the album's significance for him.

The lead single, 'Death Letter Blues,' features Taj Mahal on lead vocals and guitar, a classic originally recorded in 1965 by the legendary Delta blues artist Son House. Freeman noted that having Mahal perform this iconic song perfectly sets the stage for the album. He emphasized the importance of the release date, stating, "Launching this on Juneteenth is not merely symbolic; it reflects the origins of this music and its creators. I hope listeners take a moment to reflect on this history."

Producer Eric Meier supported Freeman's views on the importance of the Juneteenth release, stating, "Juneteenth was the only fitting date to unveil this impactful single. This music is rooted in the same history that Juneteenth celebrates." Meier described 'Death Letter Blues' as one of the most genuine pieces in the American musical canon, highlighting the innovative nature of Mahal's performance with a full symphony, recorded at both Royal Studios and Abbey Road.

In addition to the album, Freeman has announced a three-city tour to promote the project, starting in Houston on August 7, followed by shows in Memphis on September 26 and Gulfport, Mississippi, on October 17. While embarking on this musical adventure, Freeman continues to captivate audiences through his acting, currently starring in the Paramount+ series 'Lioness' and having recently narrated the Netflix documentary series 'The Dinosaurs.'
