Mayawati Calls for Action on Dalit Student Scholarships

Mayawati, the national president of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) and former Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, raised concerns on Sunday regarding the scholarship issues faced by Dalit and tribal students enrolled in various colleges affiliated with Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University in Aligarh.

In a post shared on the social media platform 'X', she stated, “The scholarships for thousands of SC/ST students (Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes) from numerous colleges linked to Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University have not been processed adequately and timely by the government.”

She expressed that this delay has led to significant anxiety and anger among students, jeopardizing their futures. Mayawati cited information she received, alleging that despite repeated correspondence from the university and district administration, there has been insensitivity and negligence from the social welfare department in Lucknow.

As a result, she noted that nearly 3,500 Dalit students are facing a serious threat to their educational pursuits. In her post, she remarked, “Given that the establishment of this university in Aligarh was made possible through the special efforts of the honorable Chief Minister, I hope he will take an interest in its smooth operation and promptly resolve the serious issues faced by thousands of Dalit students.”

Raja Mahendra Pratap Singh University, located in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on September 14, 2021. The university provides scholarships to Dalit and tribal students studying in affiliated colleges. However, some students have reported that their scholarship applications have been rejected by the university administration.
