Numerous personal items belonging to the late Matthew Perry, famed for his portrayal of Chandler Bing on the beloved series "Friends," are set to be auctioned in the United States. Perry, who tragically passed away in 2023 at the age of 54 after battling addiction, left behind a variety of possessions that showcase both his career and personal journey. The auction, arranged by his estate's executors, will feature around 130 lots, including treasured childhood keepsakes and his favorite timepiece, with proceeds directed to the Matthew Perry Foundation, which focuses on aiding those struggling with addiction.
Roberta Kramer from Heritage Auctions, overseeing the event, described the auction as a rich collection of items from Perry's life. "It's a mix of various belongings from the actor's journey," she noted, emphasizing that the collection encompasses memorabilia from "Friends" as well as personal artifacts from his youth to adulthood. This auction aims to celebrate Perry's legacy while supporting a cause he deeply cared about.
Among the standout items available for bidding is Perry's cherished Memorigin watch, featuring a Batman logo, along with artwork he amassed over the years, including pieces by the famous street artist Banksy. The auction is projected to raise approximately USD 1 million, reflecting the profound cultural influence Perry had throughout his career. Additionally, several scripts from "Friends," which depicted the lives of six friends navigating adulthood in New York City, will also be auctioned, further highlighting Perry's significant contributions to television.
Kramer pointed out that Perry founded the Matthew Perry Foundation to utilize his celebrity influence and personal battles with substance abuse to help others facing similar issues. "We believe he would be pleased that all his belongings are being used to support the foundation's mission," she remarked, emphasizing the actor's dedication to making a positive impact on the lives of those dealing with addiction.
The auction is set to occur in Dallas and online on June 5. In a related development, six individuals have been convicted in connection with Perry's death due to a ketamine overdose, with five already sentenced, including a woman dubbed the "Ketamine Queen," who posed as a dealer to celebrities. A sixth individual is anticipated to be sentenced next week, marking a tragic chapter following Perry's untimely demise.
