Mark Lee's Departure from NCT: A New Chapter Begins

In a significant development within the K-pop scene, singer Mark Lee has announced his decision to leave NCT and SM Entertainment. The agency confirmed this mutual agreement, stating that Mark will be stepping away from both the label and the NCT group, including its subunits NCT 127 and NCT Dream. He has shared his thoughts on this decision in a heartfelt message to his fans, known as NCTzens.

Mark Lee's Journey with NCT Comes to an End

The 26-year-old artist's exit was revealed through a statement on Weverse on Friday afternoon (Korean time). Following extensive discussions regarding his future, both parties agreed to terminate his exclusive contract effective April 8. Consequently, Mark will conclude all activities related to NCT and its subunits.

Mark has been a member of NCT since its inception in 2016, a group known for its unique structure featuring multiple rotating and fixed subunits. Just days prior to this announcement, he and the NCT Dream members completed a world tour with a six-show series in Seoul.

In his Instagram message, Mark expressed his feelings directly to fans, acknowledging that this news may come as a shock. He reflected on a long-held aspiration from his trainee days—traveling with an acoustic guitar, busking, and writing in English, even envisioning a future as a writer. Although he didn't fully grasp that dream back then, his love for music led him to audition in Canada 14 years ago, which ultimately brought him to SM Entertainment and his journey with NCT.

As he embarks on this new path, Mark revealed that he has been contemplating this decision for quite some time. He aims to explore the true meaning of his dream and fully commit to discovering his musical identity and how he wishes to share it with the world. He expressed gratitude and a sense of regret towards SM Entertainment, describing the decision as challenging yet essential at this juncture. Mark assured fans that he would strive to grow and return as an improved version of himself.

On the work front, the Canadian-born rapper released his debut solo album, The Firstfirst, in April 2025, a project he previously described as a crucial step in his artistic journey.

In their statement, SM Entertainment recognized Mark's contributions over the years, commending his versatility and strong presence in both group and solo endeavors. The company expressed gratitude for his time with them and offered support as he transitions into the next phase of his career. Following his departure, NCT 127 will continue as a seven-member group, consisting of Johnny, Taeyong, Yuta, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Jungwoo, and Haechan, while NCT Dream will remain a six-member group with Renjun, Jeno, Haechan, Jaemin, Chenle, and Jisung.
