Maja Chwalinska Makes History as First Qualifier in French Open Final
Historic Achievement for Maja Chwalinska
Polish tennis player Maja Chwalinska, currently ranked World No. 114, achieved a remarkable milestone by defeating Diana Shnaider from Russia in the women's singles semifinal at the 2026 French Open on June 4. This victory marks her as the first qualifier to reach the final of the women's singles at this prestigious tournament.
Chwalinska triumphed over Shnaider in straight sets, winning 7-6, 6-4. The first set was particularly intense, lasting an hour and culminating in a tie-break, where the 24-year-old displayed exceptional composure to secure it 7-6(4). She carried this momentum into the second set, solidifying her place in tennis history.
Chwalinska's Challenging Journey
Maja Chwalinska's road to her first Grand Slam final at Roland Garros was fraught with challenges. She had to navigate through three qualifying rounds to enter the main draw of the clay court event. Initially, she did not anticipate extending her stay in Paris, which led to financial concerns.
As she progressed to the fourth round, the reality of her extended stay clashed with her limited budget. Prize money is only distributed after the tournament concludes, leaving her in a precarious financial situation regarding her hotel accommodations in one of Europe's priciest cities.
Before this tournament, Chwalinska's career earnings stood at $864,030, insufficient for the financial stability enjoyed by many of her peers. Fortunately, Polish nutrition company Oshee, which also sponsors Iga Swiatek, stepped in to cover her lodging expenses, allowing her to focus on her historic performance.
A Transformative Financial Windfall
Entering Roland Garros with total career earnings of $864,030, Maja Chwalinska faced financial uncertainty, especially as prize money is awarded only after the tournament ends. However, reaching the final guarantees her a prize of $1,624,000 (around €1.4 million), surpassing her entire career earnings.
Should she win the final, her earnings could reach approximately $3,253,600 (around €2.8 million). This significant financial boost not only changes her career trajectory but also provides her with the means to invest in coaching, travel, and recovery, alleviating the stress of managing the costs associated with professional tennis.
Chwalinska's Emotional Reaction
After her semifinal victory over Diana Shnaider, Maja Chwalinska expressed her astonishment at her achievement. Despite the overwhelming nature of her success, she remained focused on preparing for the final match.
"It feels like a dream, honestly. I don’t know what’s going on. I’m just very happy," said the first-time Grand Slam finalist. She acknowledged the challenges of competing against the world's best players but emphasized her commitment to giving her all in the tournament.
Chwalinska is set to face Mirra Andreeva of Russia in the women's singles final at the French Open 2026 on Court Philippe-Chatrier on June 6, marking the second consecutive year that a new champion will be crowned in this category.
