Lisa Ray's Battle with Cancer

Lisa Ray, who first appeared on screen in Hanste Khelte, has frequently discussed her fight against cancer. Diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a rare blood cancer, in 2009 at the age of 37, she faced significant challenges. After recovering, she experienced a relapse around her wedding in 2012, which required several months of treatment. In a recent conversation with Aditi Govitrikar, Lisa shared that earlier perceptions of multiple myeloma were daunting due to limited treatment options. Nevertheless, she remained optimistic about overcoming her illness.

Lisa Ray Discusses Her Cancer Experience

During her talk with Aditi, Lisa revealed that the cancer had deeply affected her bone marrow. She reflected on how she wasn't living her true self and had not integrated all aspects of her identity. Although she felt fear, she refused to let it dominate her life. Lisa described having an almost out-of-body experience, sensing that she would emerge from this difficult period.

Despite the grim statistics presented by her doctor, Lisa chose not to dwell on the data. In contrast, her family conducted extensive research on her condition. "The doctor literally told me, 'You have five years,' and presented me with statistics. I felt as if my psyche left the room during that moment. A bit of delusion can be beneficial. Regardless of the statistics, I refused to accept that as my fate," Lisa expressed, as reported by a media outlet.

Lessons Learned from Her Diagnosis

As the discussion progressed, Lisa emphasized the significance of community support during her cancer journey. Prior to her diagnosis, she prided herself on her independence, often viewing the need for help as a weakness. Although advised to keep her diagnosis private, Lisa questioned the stigma surrounding cancer. This shame pushed her to seek support, leading her to realize the importance of sharing her vulnerabilities. Ultimately, she found solace in the kindness of strangers and those around her when she opened up about her struggles.
