Ajay Devgn's Bholaa Faces Copyright Issues

Ajay Devgn's Hindi film Bholaa has found itself embroiled in legal complications as the producers of the Tamil blockbuster Kaithi have raised copyright concerns. Recently, Dream Warrior Pictures, the studio behind Kaithi, filed a lawsuit in the Bombay High Court against the team responsible for the Hindi adaptation, Bholaa. This film is produced by Ajay Devgn Ffilms and Reliance Entertainment. The lawsuit alleges violations of copyright and breach of contract regarding the remake rights. A significant development occurred last Friday when the Bombay High Court issued a new ruling on the matter.

Bombay High Court's Ruling on the Copyright Dispute

As reported by Bar and Bench, the Bombay High Court has affirmed its jurisdiction to hear the case. Justice Sharmila Deshmukh presided over the ruling, rejecting the argument from the makers of Bholaa that the case should be exclusively handled by courts in Chennai. The court allowed Dream Warrior Pictures to continue its legal proceedings in Mumbai. The production company claims that payments stipulated in the 2023 remake agreement have not been fully settled. Additionally, they are seeking to halt the film's distribution. The next court session is set for April 30.

Details of the Copyright Case

Bholaa, released on March 30, 2023, features Ajay Devgn in the lead role and was both directed and produced by him. This horror-drama serves as the official Hindi remake of the 2019 Tamil film Kaithi. Despite the original film being released three years prior, Dream Warrior Pictures has initiated legal action, asserting that they retain exclusive rights to the original and its adaptations. Following the film's release, a tripartite agreement was established on April 1 between Dream Warrior Pictures, Reliance Entertainment, and Ajay Devgn Ffilms LLP. According to court documents, two payments due under a previous agreement, scheduled for April 29 and May 29, 2023, have allegedly not been made.

Claims from the Makers of Kaithi

The production house has stated that they sent multiple reminders throughout 2023 and 2024 regarding the outstanding payments and financial information but received no replies. Ultimately, on October 28, 2024, they issued a legal notice demanding Rs 4 crore plus interest. The notice indicated that if the payments were not made within 30 days, the agreement would be terminated, and the company would reclaim all rights.

Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj, Kaithi is also part of a larger cinematic universe that includes films like Vikram featuring Kamal Haasan and Leo starring Vijay, with a sequel already confirmed.
