Legal Issues Surrounding Suriya and Trisha's Film 'Karuppu' Amid Release Delays
Public Notice Issued by 'Karuppu' Makers
In light of the delays surrounding the release of 'Karuppu', featuring Suriya and Trisha Krishnan, the film's production team has released a public statement. Their legal representative raised concerns about the "unauthorized and illegal activation of KDMs" on Thursday. The statement indicated that the film was shown unlawfully in North India without the necessary approvals from the producers. The film is currently facing release challenges attributed to financial issues. Despite cancellations on May 14, some theaters in North India continued to screen the film, exacerbating the situation. The production team has cautioned fans against downloading or sharing any content related to the film, warning of potential legal repercussions.
Details from the Legal Counsel
Advocate Vijayan Subramanian, representing Dream Warrior Pictures, the production company behind 'Karuppu', stated that the producers hold the copyright for the film. He emphasized that the project involved significant financial investment and was intended for a global release across over 20 countries and approximately 3,000 screens. Subramanian expressed his client's shock regarding the unauthorized screenings of the Tamil version of 'Karuppu' in North India, which occurred without proper authorization. He noted that clips and scenes from the film had been recorded and shared on various social media platforms.
He warned fans that engaging in activities such as downloading, recording, or sharing any leaked content from 'Karuppu' on platforms like WhatsApp, Telegram, Instagram, Facebook, X, YouTube, or torrent sites would violate the Copyright Act of 1957, the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita of 2023, and the Information Technology Act of 2000. Such actions could lead to serious civil and criminal consequences. Subramanian urged the public to refrain from unauthorized access or distribution of the film's content, stating that those involved would face immediate legal action.
Ongoing Release Challenges
The controversy surrounding 'Karuppu' escalated when the 9 am screenings were abruptly canceled. Following this, afternoon, evening, and night shows were also called off. The production team confirmed that financial difficulties were impacting the film's release and expressed optimism about resolving the issues soon. In a heartfelt video message, director RJ Balaji expressed his regret to fans for the unfortunate circumstances.
