Legal Dispute Over Sunjay Kapur's Massive Estate Intensifies
Family Feud Over Rs 30,000 Crore Estate
The family of the deceased businessman Sunjay Kapur is embroiled in a contentious legal struggle regarding his estate valued at Rs 30,000 crore. This conflict involves his 80-year-old mother, Rani Kapur, his third wife, Priya Sachdev Kapur, and his children from his previous marriage to Karisma Kapoor. During a recent session, the Supreme Court urged all parties to seek a peaceful resolution through mediation, cautioning that prolonged litigation could lead to a lengthy and distressing ordeal for everyone involved.
Supreme Court's Mediation Suggestion
The Supreme Court bench, which included Justices J B Pardiwala and Ujjal Bhuyan, was addressing a petition from Rani Kapur, who expressed concerns regarding a board meeting of Raghuvanshi Investment Pvt Ltd. Acknowledging her age, the court encouraged all parties to act with compassion. The judges emphasized that resolving the matter amicably would be in everyone's best interest, warning that continued court battles would only exacerbate family tensions.
In their appeal for sensitivity towards Rani Kapur, the bench remarked, "We have consistently urged you to settle this. There is an 80-year-old woman involved. At some point, a compromise is necessary. What can you truly gain? We all arrive empty-handed and leave empty-handed, carrying only our souls in the end. Approach the mediator with an open heart." Previously, the Supreme Court had appointed former Chief Justice DY Chandrachud as the mediator, with all parties agreeing to pursue mediation.
Background of the Dispute
Sunjay Kapur, who was the chairman of the auto-parts firm Sona Comstar, passed away unexpectedly in June 2025 while playing polo. His substantial fortune has ignited a fierce family dispute. Following his death, his third wife, Priya, presented a will dated March 21, 2025, which bequeathed all his personal assets to her. However, Sunjay's children from his marriage to Karisma Kapoor, Samaira and Kiaan, assert that their father had promised them a share and suspect that the will may have been tampered with.
Additionally, Rani Kapur has initiated legal action against Priya, alleging that she is attempting to liquidate Sunjay's assets. Rani claims to have sent over 15 emails inquiring about the will without receiving any replies, and she contends that assets worth Rs 10,000 crore that should have belonged to her are now missing. Furthermore, Sunjay's sister, Mandhira Kapur, has accused Priya of misappropriating family funds for legal battles and has raised doubts about the authenticity of a will that excludes the children from Karisma Kapoor.
