Kiran Rao Expresses Solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk
As Sonam Wangchuk continues his hunger strike during the student protests at Jantar Mantar, various Bollywood figures have come forward to express their opinions. While some have openly shown their support for the activist, others have opted to remain silent. Recently, filmmaker Kiran Rao, known for her work on Laapataa Ladies and as the former spouse of Aamir Khan, shared a heartfelt message backing Wangchuk, the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), and Abhijeet Dipke. In her statement, Kiran voiced her disappointment regarding the lack of attention the protest has received after 19 days and questioned when those in authority would start listening to the public's concerns.
Kiran Rao Stands In Solidarity With Sonam Wangchuk
"I stand in solidarity with Sonam Wangchuk, Abhijeet Dipke, the CJP, and all citizens, young and old, who are advocating for the rights of our students," Kiran wrote, acknowledging others participating in the hunger strike for justice. She further emphasized, "Our nation owes you gratitude for awakening us from our indifference and reminding us that every voice matters." Kiran expressed her distress over the complete silence surrounding the hunger strike, stating, "What will it take for those in power to listen to the people? It is shocking and inhumane." She called on the government to engage in dialogue with the protesters to understand the students' challenges and work towards a resolution. "We, the people, have a right to be heard," she concluded.
Aamir Khan's Response to Sonam Wangchuk's Hunger Strike
In the meantime, Aamir Khan has also addressed Sonam Wangchuk's hunger strike. He clarified that the notion of 3 Idiots being inspired by the Ladakhi activist is a misunderstanding. Aamir explained that he, director Rajkumar Hirani, and writer Abhijat Joshi were not acquainted with Wangchuk during the film's production. Nevertheless, he acknowledged that Wangchuk's contributions deserve recognition, irrespective of any connection to the film. Aamir expressed concern for Wangchuk's health and urged him to conclude his hunger strike, stating, "We are all very worried about his health and life. We hope for a positive outcome and that he takes care of himself," he remarked at the BFI. His comments have drawn criticism from the Cockroach Janata Party (CJP), which labeled the response as "very cold." Social media reactions to Aamir's clarification have also been mixed.
