Kareena Kapoor is making her comeback to the silver screen with a role that intentionally challenges the typical portrayals of female law enforcement in films. In the highly anticipated crime thriller 'Daayra', directed by Meghna Gulzar, Kapoor takes on the role of DCP Ajooni, a character she describes as a significant shift from the usual hyper-masculine representations of police officers often depicted in Indian cinema.

At a promotional event in Delhi, Kapoor shared insights about how the director aimed to create a character that embodies both authority and femininity. Instead of fitting the mold of a stereotypical, aggressive officer, Ajooni is portrayed as a professional who retains her individuality while managing the demands of her challenging job. Kapoor highlighted that Ajooni is characterized by her serious demeanor and strong sense of duty, yet she embraces her femininity, even wearing lipstick and smiling while on duty.

The plot of 'Daayra' revolves around a clash between two police officers with differing philosophies on justice and how to deal with criminals. Alongside Kapoor, Prithviraj Sukumaran portrays Raman, another key character. Kapoor mentioned that the script's moral ambiguity posed a considerable challenge, as it refrains from presenting clear distinctions between right and wrong, compelling the characters to operate in a morally grey area that she finds particularly challenging.

This film marks a significant return for Kapoor, who has not been seen in a theatrical release since her role in the 2024 film 'Singham Again'. Reflecting on her extensive 25-year career, she reaffirmed her dedication to acting, expressing no interest in transitioning to production or directing. Kapoor emphasized that her fulfillment comes from discovering and embodying diverse and intriguing characters.

'Daayra' is co-written and directed by Meghna Gulzar, produced by Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios. The film stands out for its unique approach, as lyricist Gulzar has confirmed that it will not include any musical sequences. 'Daayra' is set to hit theaters on September 18.
