In the latest Marvel special, The Punisher: One Last Kill, Jon Bernthal reprises his role as Frank Castle. This 48-minute feature showcases Castle grappling with a personal crisis, including suicidal thoughts at his family's gravesite. Director Reinaldo Marcus Green discussed the casting choice during an interview on The Brandon Davis Show.
Director's Insight on Casting Jon Bernthal's Daughter
Green revealed that Jon was initially hesitant about casting Addie. However, the pivotal scene required Frank to confront his despair after seeing his late daughter. Green emphasized that this casting decision added significant emotional depth to the moment. He expressed gratitude that Jon ultimately agreed, praising Addie's performance and her promising future, regardless of whether she pursues acting.
During the filming of the cemetery scene, the atmosphere was charged with emotion, leaving crew members in tears. Jon was determined to capture the right emotional response in as few takes as possible.
Addie Bernthal's Health Journey
In a personal note, Jon Bernthal faced a challenging time in 2018 when Addie suffered a seizure and fell into a coma at just three and a half years old due to encephalitis. After three days, she awoke but did not recognize her family. Jon and his wife, Erin Angle, a trauma nurse, were by her side throughout her recovery. As a result, Christopher Abbott took over the role of Dave Scott in the film First Man, which starred Ryan Gosling.
