Johnny Depp Takes on Ebenezer Scrooge

The latest adaptation of Charles Dickens' beloved tale, A Christmas Carol, is set to debut this holiday season. Johnny Depp will portray the iconic character in Paramount's new film titled Ebenezer. The film's trailer was unveiled during Comic-Con on July 23, 2026, where Depp made a surprise appearance, delighting fans while in character and even interrupting a directors' panel. This marks Depp's significant return to Hollywood with Ebenezer, following his last studio project, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, released in 2018. He was removed from the franchise in 2020 due to allegations involving his ex-wife, Amber Heard.

Johnny Depp's Comic-Con Surprise

The film's official account on X (formerly Twitter) shared several clips of Depp engaging with fans while embodying the cantankerous Ebenezer Scrooge. He emerged from a mock Victorian shop named Scrooge and Marley, staying true to his character by muttering "Humbug" quietly. During the event, he also interacted with a fan dressed as Edward Scissorhands, another of his famous roles.

Depp has been promoting Ebenezer as his comeback film. Last year, he showcased the project at the Red Sea Film Festival and made an appearance at CinemaCon earlier this year. This is Depp's third visit to Comic-Con, having previously attended to promote Alice in Wonderland in 2009 and Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald in 2018.

Details About the Film Ebenezer

In addition to mingling with fans, Depp also crashed a directors' panel featuring filmmaker Zach Cregger. Following his surprise appearance, the trailer for Ebenezer was screened. Depp humorously pretended to offer candy to the panel attendees and remarked, "It's good to be back" as he exited. The trailer includes nods to some of Depp's most famous characters, including Jack Sparrow, Edward Scissorhands, and the Mad Hatter.

Directed by Ti West, Ebenezer features a talented ensemble cast, including Andrea Riseborough as the Ghost of Christmas Past, Tramell Tillman as the Ghost of Christmas Present, Ian McKellen as Jacob Marley, and Rupert Grint as Bob Cratchit. The film also stars Sam Claflin, Daisy Ridley, Arthur Conti, Ellie Bamber, Charlie Murphy, and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Ebenezer is scheduled to hit theaters on November 13, 2026.
