Jackie Chan's Insights on Modern Filmmaking

Los Angeles: Renowned action star Jackie Chan has expressed his concerns regarding the current state of Hollywood filmmaking, stating that the focus has shifted predominantly towards financial gain rather than artistic quality.

During his appearance at the Locarno Film Festival, where he received a career achievement award, Chan reflected on his extensive filmography, which includes classics like The Fearless Hyena (1979), Who Am I? (1998), and Police Story (1985).

In a master class session, the 71-year-old actor shared his thoughts on the difficulties of producing quality films today.

As reported by a prominent entertainment outlet, Chan remarked that older films possess a superior quality compared to contemporary releases.

He stated, "I believe that older movies are far better than those being made today... Many major studios are now run by business-minded individuals rather than filmmakers. They invest substantial amounts, like $40 million, and focus solely on how to recoup that investment. This makes it incredibly challenging to create a good film nowadays."

Known for his remarkable stunts, Chan has also ventured into directing, producing, and writing.

He humorously noted that in the realm of Asian cinema, only he and fellow martial artist Sammo Kam-Bo Hung possess a similar range of skills.

"In all of Asia, there are just two directors who can handle everything: writing, directing, acting, stunt coordination, and editing. One is Sammo Hung, and the other is Jackie Chan," he quipped.

Chan also mentioned that he is transitioning away from performing stunts, as they are increasingly perilous, and is now focusing on honing his singing abilities.

"I can't keep doing stunts forever; it's too dangerous. Wherever I go, people ask me how to punch and kick. I thought, what should I do? I should learn to sing. So, I began trying to learn how to sing," he added.

The Locarno Film Festival began on August 6 and is set to conclude on Saturday.
