Habiba Jaffrey, the spouse of actor Jaaved Jaaferi, has reportedly fallen victim to a scam involving ₹16.24 crore, orchestrated by an officer from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) related to a redevelopment initiative in Bandra. She has lodged a formal complaint against Mahesh Patil, the Assistant Municipal Commissioner of K North Ward, along with five accomplices at the Khar Police Station, alleging their involvement in a fraudulent investment scheme. Reports indicate that Mahesh Patil was suspended on June 5, with the order being executed on June 7. Additionally, businessman Nishit Patel has been apprehended in connection with this case and was presented in court, where he was remanded to police custody until May 19.

In her complaint, Habiba Jaffrey claims that Mahesh Patil and his associates enticed her into investing in a Bandra redevelopment project by promising lucrative returns. She alleges that the accused fabricated documents to facilitate the scam. According to reports, Patil has been evading authorities since the FIR was filed. The police have initiated a cheating investigation against him and the other suspects, escalating the case to the Mumbai Crime Branch due to its severity and the substantial amount involved.

How Did Mahesh Patil Dupe Habiba Jaffrey?
As reported, Mahesh Patil had previously been placed on mandatory leave in November 2025 due to allegations of improper investment practices linked to the same redevelopment project, which he denied. Habiba Jaffrey detailed in her complaint that she first encountered Patil at the BMC office, where he presented the project as a promising investment opportunity. He advised her to channel her investment through businessman Nishit Patel. Patil allegedly produced forged government registration documents, convincing Habiba, Jaaved, and their family members, including Naved Jaffrey, to invest. The total amount collected from investors reached ₹16.24 crore, acquired through various means including cheques, cash, foreign currency, and luxury watches.
