Recently, veteran actor Nasrin Sha found himself at the center of a viral social media storm due to a video featuring him alongside his sons, Vivanch Sha and Imat Sha. Many social media users claimed that this footage showed the actor participating in a protest organized by the Citizens for Justice and Peace (CJP) at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, which was in support of students involved in the alleged need paper controversy. The posts implied that Nasrin Sha was silently standing with the protesters to express his solidarity. However, investigations have debunked this claim.
The video in question was not recorded at Delhi's Jantar Mantar, nor did it capture Nasrin Sha at any protest. Instead, the footage was taken outside Regal Cinema in Kaba, Mumbai, right after a film screening. The original clip, posted on Instagram by a user named Rajes Gore on July 15, clearly shows the cinema's entrance and its surroundings, including promotional posters for films like "Raja Shivaji" and "Patipor Vo," confirming the actual location. As the video spread across social media, various edited versions emerged, stripping away key visual details that indicated the cinema's setting, leading many to mistakenly believe the actor was at the protest in Delhi.
The timeline of the video further supports the conclusion that the viral claim is inaccurate. The original footage was uploaded on July 15 and reshared on July 20, well before it began circulating with misleading captions linking it to the protest at Jantar Mantar. There is no evidence that Nasrin Sha attended the protest site or was involved in the demonstration depicted in the viral post. Despite the surrounding misinformation, Nasrin Sha has recently shown support for another public cause. He and his wife, Ratna Parataksha, joined notable figures like writer Arundhati Roy and economist Jayati Ghosh in signing a statement backing Sonam Wangchuk, who is currently on an indefinite hunger strike.
The statement commended the protesters for their commitment and acknowledged their efforts in highlighting significant issues while expressing concern for Wangchuk's health.
