Is 'The Mummy' the Next Horror Hit? Box Office Performance Raises Eyebrows
The Mummy's Box Office Journey
Lee Cronin's horror flick, The Mummy, is now in its third week of release and has caught the eye of audiences, despite receiving a lukewarm 47% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The film has shown impressive box office results, raking in a global total of $81.1 million, positioning it as the third-highest-grossing horror film of 2026, according to Box Office Mojo. While it has outperformed all three films in Sam Raimi's original Evil Dead series, The Mummy still has a considerable distance to cover before it can surpass the next two films in that franchise.
Among those films is Lee Cronin's own Evil Dead Rise (2023), which grossed $147.1 million worldwide. The other is Fede Álvarez's 2013 hit, Evil Dead. Current estimates indicate that The Mummy is unlikely to exceed the box office earnings of Evil Dead Rise, raising doubts about its ability to outpace the 2013 film's financial success.
When comparing the two horror films, it's clear that Evil Dead has a substantial lead of $26.6 million in North American earnings over The Mummy. Although The Mummy has performed better internationally, it still trails the 2013 film's total by about $16.4 million. The film's ability to close this gap will largely hinge on its performance in both domestic and international markets in the upcoming weeks.
The plot of The Mummy centers on a journalist whose young daughter mysteriously vanishes in the desert, leading to the belief that she is lost forever. Eight years later, the shocking return of the girl stuns the family, but what starts as a long-awaited reunion quickly devolves into a horrifying ordeal.
The cast includes Jack Reynor, Laia Costa, May Calamawy, Natalie Grace, and Veronica Falcón. As The Mummy continues its run in theaters, the final assessment of its box office success will become clearer in the weeks ahead.
