Transforming a Six-Acre Paradise
Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis dedicated five years to developing a six-acre estate in Los Angeles, now known as KuKu Farms, which emphasizes sustainability and solar energy. Departing from the typical Hollywood mansion style, the couple envisioned a residence that embodies the essence of a timeless farmhouse while integrating modern conveniences. This ambitious project, which commenced in 2015, was a collaborative effort with architect Howard Backen and interior designer Vicky Charles, aiming to harmonize rustic aesthetics with contemporary living.
The design approach was rooted in the concept that the home should seem as if it had been part of the landscape for many years. To realize this vision, reclaimed materials were utilized, including recycled oak flooring and exposed wooden beams, complemented by concrete finishes for an industrial flair. Expansive sliding glass windows were incorporated throughout the home, seamlessly connecting indoor spaces with the picturesque Beverly Hills surroundings. The layout comprises a main house, a guesthouse, an entertainment barn, and a barbecue pavilion, all strategically positioned to optimize the six-acre property.

A Focus on Sustainability and Family Life
Sustainability was a core principle of this project, not merely an afterthought. The estate boasts a comprehensive solar array that is integrated into the architecture of the main building. According to the engineering team and Backen & Backen, this solar system is capable of producing more electricity than the property consumes, rendering it energy-positive. The couple's commitment to eco-friendly living extends to their land management practices, including the cultivation of a cornfield during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While the home emphasizes environmental sustainability and rustic charm, it also features intentional contrasts in design. The interiors combine weathered, barn-like elements with luxurious accents, such as a grand crystal chandelier and custom silver throne chairs. This thoughtful juxtaposition was a conscious decision by the couple, who were actively involved in the design process from the initial mood boards to the final touches. By the time the home was showcased in Architectural Digest in 2021, it represented their aspiration for a private, comfortable space designed for family life, rather than a typical celebrity showcase.
