Insights into 'Boong'
Directed by Lakshmipriya Devi, Boong, which translates to “little boy” in Manipuri, narrates a child's emotional journey amidst social and political turmoil. The film is produced by Farhan Akhtar alongside Vikesh Bhutani, Alan McAlex, Ritesh Sidhwani, and Shujaat Saudagar. It premiered in select theaters in September 2025 following a successful festival circuit.
The narrative centers on young Boong, portrayed by Gugun Kipgen, who is on a mission to reunite his estranged family. He believes that bringing his absent father back would be the ultimate gift for his single mother, Mandakini, played by Bala Hijam. Accompanied by his best friend Raju, enacted by Angom Sanamatum, Boong embarks on a brave quest that takes him to the border town of Moreh and even into Myanmar in search of his father.
Set against the intricate and often tense socio-political landscape of Manipur, the film thoughtfully examines themes of resilience, childhood innocence, and the emotional impact of conflict on everyday lives. Rather than showcasing conflict through grand spectacles, Boong emphasizes the personal struggles of a child striving to keep his family united.
The cast also includes Vikram Kochhar, Hamom Sadananda, and Thoudam Brajabidhu. Prior to its theatrical release, Boong made its debut at the 2024 Toronto International Film Festival and was featured at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne 2025, the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival, and the Warsaw International Film Festival, where it garnered critical acclaim.
