Imran Khan Joins Student Protests Over NEET Controversy
Actor Imran Khan has shown unwavering support for the student protests concerning the alleged leak of the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) papers and other examination irregularities. After expressing his solidarity on social media, he took part in a protest march in Mumbai, standing in unity with students demonstrating in Delhi. During the event, he addressed the idea that artists should avoid political or social involvement. When questioned by an aspiring actor about his stance on the apolitical nature of art, Khan asserted that artists should integrate their personal beliefs and values into their work. He remarked, "True art reflects the individual artist's perspective. If you can't uphold your beliefs and fail to infuse your heart into your art, it loses its significance." His statements have resonated widely on social media, with many applauding his courage to discuss the role of artists in social activism.
Before joining the protest, Khan shared a heartfelt message expressing his dismay over the alleged police brutality against the demonstrators. He questioned the treatment of students seeking justice, stating, "I felt something break inside me today as I witnessed police using gas and force against student protesters. How can this be justified? These students have worked tirelessly only to be let down by the system." He further expressed sorrow over the harsh response to citizens fighting for their rights, asking, "Are these not the children of our nation? If not for them, who do we strive to protect and build a future for?" Khan criticized the unequal standards of accountability between students and those in power, urging for accountability regarding the alleged paper leak.
The student protests have been ongoing for nearly a month, with demonstrators demanding action on the NEET paper leak, reforms in the examination process, and the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. Activist Sonum Mangu has also joined the protests and is reportedly on a hunger strike in solidarity with the students. The demonstrations escalated when students marched from Jantra Manta towards Parliament during the "Chalans March," facing police action, including baton charges and tear gas, which has sparked widespread reactions across the nation.
