Hoppers: Daniel Chong's Animated Film Surpasses Expectations at the Box Office
Hoppers' Box Office Success
Daniel Chong's animated feature, Hoppers, is approaching the end of its two-month theatrical run. The film debuted with a remarkable $45.3 million in North America and has since accumulated a domestic total of $164.8 million. This impressive figure puts Hoppers well ahead of Sony's animated sports comedy, GOAT, which has garnered $103.3 million, creating a substantial gap of $61.5 million at the domestic box office.
Globally, Hoppers has achieved a total of $375.7 million, outpacing GOAT by about $185.3 million, which has a worldwide total of $190.4 million, as reported by The Numbers. With a production budget estimated at $150 million, Hoppers needed to reach $375 million globally to break even, following the standard 2.5x multiplier rule. The film has already surpassed its break-even point by $0.7 million.
As Hoppers nears the conclusion of its theatrical run, it is crucial to evaluate its performance against Pixar's last five major theatrical releases, excluding those that went directly to streaming. Current statistics show that Hoppers ranks third among these films, with the top-grossing title being Inside Out 2, which achieved an impressive $1.699 billion worldwide.
With its current global earnings of $375.7 million, Hoppers has outperformed Elio, Lightyear, and Onward, but still falls short of both Inside Out 2 and Elemental. Surpassing Elemental's global total of $496.4 million seems unlikely at this point, although the final assessment of Hoppers' box office performance will become clearer in the upcoming weeks.
Directed by Daniel Chong, Hoppers tells the story of Mabel, an animal enthusiast who employs groundbreaking technology that enables humans to transfer their consciousness into realistic robotic animals. After she hops into a robotic beaver to connect with wildlife, Mabel uncovers a threat to their forest environment and must help the animals safeguard their home.
