Hollywood's Recovery: SAG-AFTRA Reaches New Agreement with Studios
Hollywood's Path to Recovery
The summer of 2023 marked a challenging period for Hollywood, as both the writers' and actors' unions initiated a strike against the studios, leading to a complete halt in production. Numerous films and television shows faced cancellations or were put on hold. Fast forward three years, and Hollywood is gradually regaining its footing. Although the industry has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, signs of recovery are evident. With a new agreement established between the actors' union and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, the threat of another strike has been alleviated. Here’s what you need to know about this tentative agreement.
Details of the New SAG-AFTRA Agreement
On May 2, SAG-AFTRA announced via social media that a tentative agreement had been reached. This new contract encompasses motion pictures, scripted primetime television, streaming content, and new media. The previous agreement was established in 2023 for SAG-AFTRA TV/Theatrical Contracts. While the deal awaits approval from the SAG-AFTRA National Board, further details will be shared by the union soon. The national board is scheduled to convene shortly, and members will participate in a ratification vote. The current contract is set to expire on June 30, 2026.
Key Terms of the New Agreement
Negotiations for the new contract began in February 2026 between the studios, represented by the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, and SAG-AFTRA. A significant concern for the actors' union was the implications of generative AI. SAG-AFTRA had previously established guidelines for AI-related consent and compensation in 2023, but the situation has evolved considerably since then. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, SAG-AFTRA's chief negotiator, Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, emphasized that any AI-generated performances should be compensated at rates comparable to those of live actors at events like the Consumer Electronics Show.
Compensation for SAG-AFTRA members was another critical topic. Sean Astin, the union's president and a star of The Lord of the Rings, expressed concerns over declining actor wages, which have made it difficult for performers to qualify for healthcare. With rising inflation and living costs, there is a pressing need for salary increases. The union is also advocating for enhanced contributions to pension funds.
Insights on the WGA Agreement
Earlier this year, the Writers Guild of America, which also participated in a strike in 2023, successfully negotiated a new four-year agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Despite a low voter turnout, the contract was extended for four years, although the guild had aimed for a five-year term. Both sides experienced gains and losses in the negotiations.
