Exciting News About 'The Family Stone' Sequel

Dermot Mulroney, the Hollywood star known for his role in the classic 2005 holiday film 'The Family Stone,' has confirmed that a sequel is in the works, tentatively titled 'The Families Stone.' During his recent guest appearance on 'The Tangle' podcast, Mulroney, who portrayed Everett Stone, shared that many original cast members are likely to return for this new chapter. He stated, "I think it's going to be entitled 'The Families Stone'," and assured fans that "everyone's up for returning."

Among the returning cast are expected to be Luke Wilson, Rachel McAdams, and Craig T. Nelson. The original film also featured Sarah Jessica Parker, Claire Danes, Elizabeth Reaser, Ty Giordano, Brian White, Paul Schneider, and the late Diane Keaton, who played the matriarch, Sybil Stone. Mulroney revealed that the sequel's concept was revisited by director Thomas Bezucha after Keaton's passing in October 2025. He noted, "It was after Diane Keaton's death that Thomas Bezucha re-approached this storyline," adding that Bezucha quickly crafted a compelling script that many actors have already agreed to join.

Reflecting on Keaton's profound influence, Mulroney remarked, "She was so impactful on all of our lives in that mother part in that life-altering movie." Sarah Jessica Parker also acknowledged the emotional weight of the sequel, expressing her excitement during a chat with Variety at the Golden Eve gala earlier this year. While she is thrilled about the project, Parker mentioned the bittersweet feeling of moving forward without Keaton, stating, "It's a rather bittersweet quandary given the loss of Diane Keaton."

Bezucha had previously shared with CNN that he began working on the sequel before Keaton's death, describing her loss as "a blow on a tender bruise already." He has been revisiting the film's setting, reflecting on Keaton's absence. The cast and crew share a deep emotional connection to the original film and its characters as they prepare to honor Keaton's legacy in the upcoming sequel.

In addition to his role in 'The Families Stone,' Mulroney has recently appeared in 'Chicago Fire' and is set to star in upcoming projects 'November 1963' and 'The Hunting Wives.' As excitement grows for the sequel, fans of the original film are eager to see how the story unfolds and pays tribute to the cherished memories of the late Diane Keaton.
