Sony Pictures has finalized the main cast for its eagerly awaited biopic focusing on the life of the legendary Fred Astaire. Tom Holland is set to take on the role of the iconic dancer and actor, with Margaret Qualley and Sabrina Carpenter joining him as significant figures in Astaire's life and career.

Qualley, known for her performances in Maid and The Substance, will portray Adele Astaire, Fred’s elder sister and his first dance partner during their formative years on Broadway and in the London West End. On the other hand, Grammy-winning artist Sabrina Carpenter will play the role of Ginger Rogers, Astaire's most renowned on-screen dance partner in a series of classic Hollywood musicals.

Directed by Paul King, the film is based on a screenplay he co-wrote with Steven Levenson, drawing inspiration from Kathleen Riley’s book, The Astaires: Fred & Adele. Riley also serves as a script and story consultant for the project. King views this film as a chance to shed light on the often-overlooked contributions of Adele Astaire, whose partnership with her brother preceded his monumental success with Rogers.

King shared his excitement about the casting, highlighting that the portrayal of these 20th-century legends would be a daunting task without the unique talents of Holland, Qualley, and Carpenter. He pointed out that while Fred Astaire’s legacy is often associated with his work alongside Rogers, the early influence of his sister Adele is a crucial, yet historically underappreciated, aspect of his story.

Tom Holland has been linked to this project for around five years, dedicating time to prepare for the physically challenging role. In addition to acting, Holland is also producing the film through his production company, Billy 17. The production team features Amy Pascal from Pascal Pictures, along with Rachel O'Connor, Ben Holden, and Josh Hyams from Lightbulb Pictures.

Fred Astaire’s illustrious career spanned seven decades, featuring over 30 film musicals and extensive stage performances. His collaborations with Ginger Rogers, including classics like Top Hat, Swing Time, and The Gay Divorcee, are foundational to musical cinema. With the main cast now confirmed, the production is set to progress with a team of executive producers that includes Harry Holland, Will South, Will Clarke, Andy Mayson, and screenwriter Steven Levenson.
