Three years before his passing, Kirby disclosed his diagnosis of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), a progressive neurodegenerative disorder. He reflected on his significant impact in the entertainment world, stating, “I can’t watch a film or turn on the TV without seeing someone John coached or influenced. His impact is everywhere in this industry.” His coaching legacy includes contributions to major films such as 'Peter Pan', 'The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe', and 'Scream 4'.

ALS, as described by the Cleveland Clinic, disrupts the communication between nerve cells and muscles, resulting in progressive weakness. The condition affects movement, speech, and breathing, with treatments aimed at alleviating symptoms and slowing progression. Kirby's struggle with ALS showcased his determination and passion for acting, even amid challenges.

After the news of his death, tributes from celebrities, friends, and fans flooded in. Chrissy Metz, recognized for her role in 'This is Us', shared a touching tribute on Instagram, remembering Kirby as both a mentor and a friend. She wrote, “In your suffering, you remained a brilliant and selfless teacher who will continue to bring people together. Your legacy will live on in every one of us, always.”
