Nicolas Cage Faces Housing Crisis After Sinkhole Disaster at Malibu Home
Nicolas Cage's Unexpected Housing Situation
Hollywood star Nicolas Cage has revealed that he currently lacks a permanent home due to a significant geological incident at his Malibu property. During a recent event at Los Angeles Comic Con, the 60-year-old actor shared that he has been residing in hotels following a substantial sinkhole that compromised access to his beachfront residence.
The sinkhole incident, which took place in September 2026, was caused by severe coastal erosion, heavy rainfall, and elevated tides affecting the Southern California coast. This sinkhole, measuring around 30 feet by 30 feet, inflicted considerable damage to the driveway and the nearby road. The situation was serious enough for the City of Malibu to declare 31 properties in the vicinity unsafe, as emergency services, including fire and police, were unable to reach these homes.

The damage to Cage's Sea Level Drive home, which he acquired for $10.5 million in 2024, went beyond just the driveway. Reports indicate that the sinkhole also caused a gas leak, prompting authorities to cut off the gas supply to the neighborhood for safety reasons. Although Cage has obtained permits for debris removal and soil testing to initiate stabilization efforts, there is no confirmed timeline for when his home will be livable again.
This displacement has altered the actor's personal life, affecting his holiday traditions. Cage mentioned that he was unable to host trick-or-treaters for Halloween this year. Instead, he celebrated the holiday with his wife, Riko Shibata, and their four-year-old daughter, August, opting for festivities in Santa Monica. He shared that his evening plans included watching Stanley Kubrick's horror classic, The Shining, after his daughter went to bed.

The Malibu property is just one of many notable real estate holdings associated with Cage throughout his career. Renowned for his diverse and eclectic real estate portfolio, he has owned various international properties, including European castles, a waterfront home in Newport Beach, and even a private island in the Bahamas. In addition to real estate, Cage is known for his passion for unique collectibles, such as a rare Superman comic book he famously bought for over $100,000, which later sold for more than $1.6 million.
As repairs are underway, Cage continues to stay in temporary accommodations. The City of Malibu is actively monitoring the situation, with officials stressing that the primary focus remains on restoring safe access for both residents and emergency responders.
