Matthew Macfadyen Unveils First Look as George Smiley in 'Legacy of Spies'

A Glimpse into the World of Espionage

The initial official image of Matthew Macfadyen portraying George Smiley has been unveiled, providing fans with a sneak peek of the actor as the iconic spymaster created by John le Carré. Macfadyen, known for his role as Tom Wambsgans in the hit series Succession and as Mr. Darcy in the 2005 adaptation of Pride & Prejudice, is seen wearing the character's distinctive glasses in the newly released promotional material for the upcoming series, Legacy of Spies.

This eight-part drama represents a significant collaboration between the BBC and MGM, marking a remarkable return of the character to television. It has been almost forty years since George Smiley was last featured in a TV series, with Alec Guinness famously embodying the intelligence officer in the BBC’s 1979 adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and its 1982 sequel, Smiley's People. More recently, Gary Oldman portrayed the character in the 2011 film adaptation of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.

A New Era for the Legendary Spymaster

The series boasts a talented ensemble cast, including Charlie Hunnam as Alec Leamas, the British intelligence officer who is the protagonist in le Carré’s novel The Spy Who Came in from the Cold. Alongside Macfadyen and Hunnam, Hugh Laurie has been cast as Control, Smiley's morally ambiguous superior. The production also features a diverse supporting cast, including Daniel Brühl, Devrim Lingnau Islamoglu, Agnes O'Casey, Felix Kammerer, Dan Stevens, Jake Dunn, Anjana Vasan, Charlotte Ritchie, and Joe Alwyn.

Legacy of Spies will adapt several of John le Carré’s most acclaimed works, such as The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, The Honourable Schoolboy, and A Legacy of Spies. The author, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 89, is regarded as one of the most significant post-war writers, drawing extensively from his experiences as an intelligence officer for MI5 and MI6 during the 1950s and 1960s. His literary works have often been adapted for film and television, with notable adaptations including the series The Night Manager, featuring Tom Hiddleston, and the film The Constant Gardener, starring Ralph Fiennes and Rachel Weisz.
