Matt Damon Reflects on His Role in Christopher Nolan's Epic Film The Odyssey
Matt Damon's Journey in The Odyssey
Over his impressive 35-year career, Matt Damon has established himself as a versatile actor, Oscar-winning screenwriter, and producer. In Christopher Nolan's upcoming film The Odyssey, he takes on the iconic role of Odysseus, a character from Homer's renowned epic. Damon expressed his admiration for the project, stating that he couldn't fathom the complexities involved in orchestrating a film of such magnitude. The production took place across various stunning locations, including Morocco, Greece, Italy, Scotland, Iceland, and Malta.
Matt Damon's Lifelong Anticipation for The Odyssey
During a recent press conference, Damon described The Odyssey as his most significant film to date, highlighting the intricate nature of Odysseus as a character. He remarked, "This felt like my singular opportunity to create a film akin to those of David Lean, a dream I've held for years. From the moment Nolan reached out, I felt immense gratitude. I understood the scale of the undertaking, which demanded the efforts of countless individuals, yet I felt a deep connection with everyone involved."
He further shared, "I told Emma early on, 'I can't believe you chose to produce this film; what were you thinking?' I'm relieved not to be in a producer's role because the level of coordination was beyond imagination. Emma reassured me, saying, 'This is like making six or seven films, but we've already tackled each of those aspects, so we're ready for this one.' I felt that it required every skill I've honed throughout my career to rise to this occasion, and I was fortunate to do so alongside an extraordinary team."
The Grand Scale of The Odyssey
Damon recounted the experience of filming the fall of Troy in The Odyssey, where he was closely followed by cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema with an IMAX camera. He described a scene filled with chaos, where buildings were ablaze and thousands were engaged in battle. He recalled, "In the midst of this beautiful chaos, I saw someone run past me on fire, a small detail in the shot. Then Chris shouted 'Cut,' and everything froze. Hoyte removed the camera from his shoulder, turned to me, and said, 'You realize this is a flashback.' That was my moment of realization that this was as grand as it gets."
Alongside Damon, The Odyssey features Anne Hathaway portraying Penelope, Odysseus' wife, and Tom Holland as their son Telemachus. The film, shot entirely in IMAX, is set to premiere in theaters worldwide on July 17.
