The eagerly awaited reboot of Blade, starring Mahershala Ali, was first unveiled at Comic-Con in 2019, sparking considerable enthusiasm among fans. Ali even made a brief vocal cameo as the character during a post-credits scene in the Marvel film Eternals released in 2021. However, the project has encountered multiple setbacks and has now been officially put on hold, leading Ali to voice his frustrations with Marvel Studios regarding their dedication to the film.

While promoting his latest film, Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother, directed by Bassam Tariq—who was originally attached to direct the Blade reboot—Ali shared his thoughts on how the shelving of Blade has influenced his career trajectory. In a conversation with GQ, he noted that the cancellation of Blade opened doors for him to explore new opportunities. “When I look at this and Blade, I couldn’t have done both... I feel creatively redeemed on some level,” he remarked, highlighting the personal development he experienced during this shift.

Despite his current project, Ali expressed disappointment over the Blade reboot. He stated, “If they wanted to do it, we would’ve done it,” suggesting that Marvel's inaction indicated a lack of interest. His remarks reflect a deeper acceptance, as he recognized that not all projects are meant to come to fruition. “What is for you is for you and what is not is not,” he added, underscoring his determination to move forward.

The Blade reboot was initially slated to be directed by Tariq before Yann Demange took over the reins. After years of development, the film failed to advance to production, and by 2025, rumors began to circulate about its official shelving. This speculation was confirmed last month by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who expressed regret over the project's inability to come to life.

In a frank discussion on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige admitted feeling like a “gigantic loser and failure” for not realizing the film with Ali. He explained that Marvel's ambition for a fresh interpretation of the character led to the decision to halt production, as they felt they could not elevate the script to the desired standard. Blade, a vampire hunter from Marvel Comics, first graced the screen in the successful 1998 film featuring Wesley Snipes, which led to two sequels and a cameo in the upcoming Deadpool and Wolverine (2024).
