Box Office Success of 'The Devil Wears Prada 2'

In its second weekend, The Devil Wears Prada 2, featuring stars like Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, and Stanley Tucci, has already outperformed the original 2006 film. Directed by David Frankel, the first installment grossed $326.5 million globally, a figure that the sequel has surpassed in just nine days. With Mother's Day approaching on May 10, the film is anticipated to see a significant increase in box office revenue for the second week in a row. Let's explore how The Devil Wears Prada 2 is faring on the international stage.

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' Breaks Records in Just 9 Days

According to reports from Deadline, the sequel raked in $101.8 million during its opening week in the United States and a total of $222.2 million worldwide. Competing against another sequel, Mortal Kombat II, which debuted on May 8, The Devil Wears Prada 2 is attracting a predominantly female audience that is returning for repeat viewings. This trend could lead to an estimated $40 to $50 million in earnings for its second weekend, especially with Mother's Day around the corner. Furthermore, by May 9, the sequel is projected to surpass the original film's entire domestic earnings of $124.7 million in just nine days.

Director Frankel, along with screenwriter Aline Brosh McKenna and the lead cast, waited for the right moment to bring this sequel to life. As reported by Variety, Streep, Hathaway, and Blunt each received $12.5 million under a “favoured nations” agreement regarding their pay. This arrangement also allows for potential bonuses as the sequel continues to break records.

The original film was produced with a budget of $35 million and went on to earn $326 million globally. In contrast, the sequel's budget is over $100 million, primarily allocated to its star-studded cast.
