How Meryl Streep Personally Brought Lady Gaga to The Devil Wears Prada 2
Meryl Streep's Direct Call to Lady Gaga
In a recent revelation, Meryl Streep shared that she took the initiative to reach out to Lady Gaga for a role in The Devil Wears Prada 2. This direct phone call, as reported by a media outlet, marked a significant step in bringing the pop star into the film's ensemble. After two decades, this sequel is a much-anticipated reunion for both Streep and Anne Hathaway. The storyline follows Miranda Priestly as she navigates the challenges of a declining print media landscape, while Andy Sachs returns as the new Features Editor at Runway, following her career in investigative journalism, which was disrupted by layoffs. Fans are particularly excited to see Lady Gaga, who will portray a pop star in the film.
Streep's Role in Casting Lady Gaga
During an appearance on Heart Breakfast, the 76-year-old actress discussed how Gaga, now 40, became part of the sequel. "That was me. Thank you. You're welcome," she humorously responded to co-star Emily Blunt's surprise. Streep recounted calling Gaga while dining with Tracy in Islington, thinking it was worth a shot. In the film, Gaga's character performs in Milan.
"I just said, 'Would you do this? Because it's going to be really good.' And she said, 'Yeah!'" Streep added. Blunt, 43, praised Gaga, calling her a "creative storm" and referencing her recent performances, including the MAYHEM Ball tour.
Director David Frankel also spoke about Gaga's involvement during an interview, confirming her role as a pop star. "We wrote a pop star into the sequence," he explained. "They're doing this whole show in Milan, and there was this one line in the script where a pop star does a performance," as reported by a media outlet.
Frankel mentioned that the studio initially believed a prominent pop star cameo wasn't necessary. However, he insisted, "No, no, no, we need a pop star." The studio then suggested Gaga as the ideal choice for the role.
He further elaborated that the collaboration came together seamlessly after Streep met Gaga at the SNL50 show, where they discussed potential projects. With Disney's backing, Frankel encouraged Streep to reach out to Gaga.
"That's how the ball got rolling," he noted. "Gaga was super excited and even wrote songs for us, and the timing was perfect since we were shooting in Milan the same week she was performing there," according to a media outlet.
As the sequel unfolds, Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway reprise their iconic roles as Miranda Priestly and Andrea Sachs, bringing fresh challenges, engaging drama, and, of course, evolved fashion to the screen. The Devil Wears Prada 2 is set to hit theaters globally on May 1.
