Tolkan had a prolific career spanning over fifty years. He made his television debut in the 1960 series Naked City and continued to act until his last appearance in the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk. He is particularly remembered for his role as the strict Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy, where he appeared in the first two films and reprised his role as the character's grandfather in the third installment.

In Top Gun (1986), directed by Tony Scott, he portrayed Commander Tom 'Stinger' Jardian, sharing the screen with stars like Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan. Born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing his education at Coe College and the University of Iowa. He is survived by his wife, Parmelee, whom he met in 1971 during an off-Broadway production of Pinkville.
