Known for his memorable performances in Top Gun and the Back to the Future series, he passed away on Thursday in Saranac Lake, New York. The announcement was made by Michael Klastorin, a unit publicist for Back to the Future Part II and Part III, along with writer-producer Bob Gale, on the franchise's official website. James Tolkan: A Legacy in Film


Tolkan had a prolific career spanning over fifty years. He made his television debut in the 1960 series Naked City and continued to act until his last appearance in the 2015 film Bone Tomahawk. He is particularly remembered for his role as the strict Principal Strickland in the Back to the Future trilogy, where he appeared in the first two films and reprised his role as the character's grandfather in the third installment.



In Top Gun (1986), directed by Tony Scott, he portrayed Commander Tom 'Stinger' Jardian, sharing the screen with stars like Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, and Meg Ryan. His filmography also includes titles such as WarGames, The Amityville Horror, Armed and Dangerous, and They Might Be Giants. On television, he appeared in shows like The Wonder Years, Leverage, The Pretender, Early Edition, and Nowhere Man.

About James Tolkan


Born on June 20, 1931, in Calumet, Michigan, Tolkan served in the U.S. Navy before pursuing his education at Coe College and the University of Iowa. He later relocated to New York to study at the Actors Studio under the guidance of Stella Adler and Lee Strasberg. He is survived by his wife, Parmelee, whom he met in 1971 during an off-Broadway production of Pinkville.
