Asian representation in Hollywood and global cinema is on the rise. A fresh cross-cultural romance film, My Indian Boyfriend: The Golden Mile, seeks to showcase a British-Indian storyline, featuring Sushant Shekhar in the lead role. The story of My Indian Boyfriend: The Golden Mile revolves around Krishna, a British-Indian dancer played by Sushant Shekhar, known for his roles in The Best Is Yet To Come and Indian Ink. Krishna is portrayed as a character striving to balance his dreams with family obligations. The plot follows his relationship with Jasmine, an architecture graduate played by Jolene Tiong, whose life intertwines with his during a transformative summer in Leicester.
A key element of the film is the annual Diwali festival in Leicester, one of the largest celebrations outside India. This festive setting is anticipated to significantly influence the film's emotional arc and storytelling. The project aims to elevate South Asian narratives on a global stage.
Sushant Shekhar, of Indian heritage, is set to make his feature film debut with this project. An alumnus of the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama’s MA Acting program, he has also trained at the Fontainebleau School of Acting. Expressing his gratitude for the opportunity, Shekhar emphasized his commitment to portraying Krishna authentically. “I’m deeply grateful to everyone involved in the production for entrusting me with the opportunity to portray Krishna,” he shared in an interview with Variety.
Supporting Cast of My Indian Boyfriend
Alongside Sushant Shekhar and Jolene Tiong, the film's production team has announced a diverse supporting cast. Chacko George Vadaketh will take on the role of Krishna’s father, bringing his experience from television, film, and theatre across Malaysia, Singapore, and the United States. The supporting ensemble also includes Adryne Caulder-James and Jennifer Jade, with young actor Arun Sharma joining while continuing his studies. The film's diverse cast and its announcement at Cannes have sparked optimism for enhanced representation of the Asian community in cinema.
