Ficarra, along with co-director John Requa, auditioned a multitude of actresses for the role of Hannah Weaver, aiming to find someone who could complement Gosling's charm. In an interview with PEOPLE, Ficarra shared, "We had a full day of readings with various actresses. Many were talented, but when Ryan walked in, they seemed a bit nervous." He mentioned that Stone's audition faced some logistical hurdles, yet she managed to excel.

During the audition, Gosling, trying to be natural, fumbled a line. In a defining moment, Stone quickly interjected, saying, "Oh, you’re killing this. You’re doing great," demonstrating her sharp wit and self-assurance. Ficarra fondly recalled, "She just flipped him the script right then and there, and we all thought, ‘Okay, that’s it. That’s the person.’ We were excited to work with her. Even in the little things she did, she was exceptional."
