A New Era for Horror Films

Curry Barker's latest project, Obsession, has made waves at the box office, achieving remarkable success despite its modest budget of around $750,000. Breaking away from conventional horror film trends, this movie has seen a remarkable increase in revenue over consecutive weekends, making it the highest-grossing film acquisition ever.

Fans have been eagerly anticipating its streaming debut, and the digital release date has finally been announced.

Significantly, Obsession has outperformed the previous box office record set by The Blair Witch Project, which earned $248.6 million worldwide after its acquisition at the Sundance Film Festival in 1999. As reported by Deadline, Barker's film has established a new record as the highest-grossing film ever acquired at a festival. Starring Indie Navarrette and Michael Johnston, the film has consistently exceeded expectations, including a remarkable fourth weekend where it surpassed its opening weekend earnings of $17.1 million.

Originally, Obsession was set for a digital release on June 2, 2026, but its extraordinary box office performance led distributor Focus Features to revise this timeline. The film debuted with $17 million, and instead of the anticipated revenue drop, it thrived, earning $5.7 million on the day it was initially scheduled for streaming. This unexpected performance prompted Focus Features to rethink its digital release strategy.

This year, Universal Pictures, which owns Focus Features, announced a shift in its distribution approach, opting for a minimum five-week theatrical window before digital releases. However, Focus Features still has the option to implement the 17-day theatrical model. Obsession, featuring Michael Johnston as Bear and Indie Navarrette as Nikki, has made history as the first film since 1982's E.T.: The Extraterrestrial to witness revenue increases during its second and third weekends, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
