As Bollywood gears up for its March 2026 releases, the industry has made room for the highly anticipated film Dhurandhar: The Revenge. Despite this, several Hollywood and regional films are maintaining their release schedules this month. Following the successful run of Dhurandhar 2, Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary is set to debut in Indian theaters this Thursday, having already premiered in the U.S. and Canada on March 20. However, the film is reportedly encountering unforeseen obstacles at the box office. Reports indicate that Project Hail Mary opened its bookings just a day prior to its release and is facing difficulties in securing screening slots due to the overwhelming demand for Dhurandhar 2.
Project Hail Mary Faces Competition
Shot in IMAX format, Project Hail Mary is anticipated to draw audiences to large-format screens. A trade insider mentioned that the film is likely to share IMAX screens with Dhurandhar 2. According to a report from Bollywood Hungama, some theaters had initially allocated slots for the Hollywood film but later paused bookings. After limited advance sales in select areas, bookings have now fully opened on BookMyShow.
Approximately 25,000 tickets were sold for the opening day, and with IMAX bookings now available, those numbers are expected to increase.
Dhurandhar 2 vs. Project Hail Mary
Meanwhile, insiders have noted that Dhurandhar: The Revenge is performing exceptionally well, leading exhibitors to hesitate in reducing its showtimes. However, the strong advance bookings and favorable international reviews for Gosling's sci-fi film have prompted distributors to seek additional screens. The situation appears to be stabilizing, with multiple showings now available across various locations in India.
Earlier, directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller of Project Hail Mary expressed their thoughts on the competition with Dhurandhar 2, stating that the presence of strong local films is beneficial for the global box office and Bollywood.
