Michael Biopic Set for Global Release

Antoine Fuqua's highly anticipated film, Michael, is set to debut in theaters worldwide this weekend. The movie features Jaafar Jackson portraying his legendary uncle, Michael Jackson, and chronicles the pop icon's journey from performing with his brothers to achieving solo stardom. Notably, the film has stirred discussions due to the absence of Janet Jackson, one of Michael's siblings. Just a day before its global premiere on April 24, it was disclosed that actress Kat Graham has been removed from the film. She was cast as Diana Ross and took to social media to explain the circumstances surrounding her exclusion.

Kat Graham Excluded from the Film Due to Legal Issues

Kat Graham cut from Michael Jackson biopic for legal reasons

On X (formerly Twitter), Kat Graham shared a message with her followers, announcing her removal from the Michael Jackson biopic. She mentioned, "I want to share that certain legal considerations affected a few scenes, including ones I filmed with an incredible cast." Despite the filmmakers' efforts to honor Michael's legacy, her portrayal of Diana Ross did not make it into the final version of the film.

The actress, known for her role in The Vampire Diaries, was set to depict the iconic singer Diana Ross, who had a significant relationship with Michael since their childhood when he performed with the Jackson 5. Michael's brother Jermaine has previously stated that the song Remember the Time was written by Michael for Ross.

Changes Made to the Film Before Its Release

Michael biopic retooled before release

Originally, Fuqua's musical biopic was intended to be longer, featuring scenes where Jackson addressed allegations of child sexual abuse. However, a segment involving one of the accusers was removed following a prior settlement that prohibited dramatization of those events. Additionally, a sequel focusing on Michael's life until his passing in 2009 is currently in development.
