Exploring the Quirky Adventures in 'Local Times' on Prime Video
A Look at 'Local Times'
'Local Times' is a Tamil series available on Prime Video that follows the misadventures of a struggling newspaper, Namma Seidhi. Once a respected publication, it now finds itself repurposed for wrapping snacks. The story centers around Veera, the grandson of the founder Chelladurai, who is determined to keep the paper afloat with the help of his optimistic friend Azhagu, the resourceful Srivalli, and the quirky intern Muthu.
Veera, portrayed by Rishikanth, is burdened by debt and is fixated on boosting ad revenue, a daunting task given his financial obligations to the local tea shop. Azhagu, played by Abdool Lee, remains hopeful about the newspaper's future, while Srivalli (Adwitha Arumugam) serves as the voice of reason. Muthu (Maurish Das) adds a comedic flair, embodying the notion that a group of four can lead to chaos.
This seven-episode series, directed by Naveen George Thomas, does not aim to serve as a journalism guide. Instead, it showcases a series of humorous vignettes, crafted by writers Praveen Muthurangan, Abbhinav Kastura, Satwik Gade, Thomas Manuel, and Visvaksen P, that highlight the characters' interactions rather than the newspaper's operations.
The episodes tackle light-hearted issues, such as a missing girl whose case is resolved through an unexpected twist rather than traditional reporting, and an elderly woman (Nanditha Sreekumar) seeking adoption after being abandoned. Veera's grandfather Chelladurai (Chinni Jayanth) appears intermittently as a ghostly presence, while Vallal (R Pandiarajan), the moneylender, adds a touch of tension.
Romantic tension simmers between police officer Krishnaveni (Rini) and Veera, while Azhagu and Srivalli develop a charming rapport. The plot thickens when a mysterious buyer expresses interest in acquiring Namma Seidhi, presenting Veera with a difficult decision.
'Local Times' thrives on its comedic elements, often overlooking its thin and sometimes absurd plot. The strong performances from the cast and a wealth of humorous moments keep the series engaging, even as it neglects the intricacies of news gathering in favor of laughter.
