A Deep Dive into 'Haq'

Backed by Junglee Pictures, the film Haq has made a significant impact. Featuring Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, the narrative is inspired by a pivotal Supreme Court ruling that champions the rights of Muslim women in India. Directed by Suparn S Varma, this critically acclaimed film showcases Yami as Shazia Bano and Emraan as Abbas. In an exclusive chat with a media outlet, the film's writer, Reshu Nath, discussed the process of creating this intense courtroom drama while remaining faithful to the historical judgement. However, she noted that some creative liberties were taken in portraying personal aspects, such as depicting Shazia as a ‘woman of faith’.

Insights from Writer Reshu Nath on Creative Liberties

When asked about the creative choices made in Haq, Reshu explained, “We only took liberties in personal narratives because this is a vast historical event. We aimed to tell it through the intimate perspective of a woman who often remains within her home. Women from that era, and even today, can feel like bonsais—fully capable yet confined to a small universe. This perspective added depth to the storytelling.”

Shazia Bano: A Real Woman, Not a Warrior

She further elaborated, “We maintained authenticity regarding the legal case, as it was a journey we wanted to respect. However, we did take creative liberties with Shazia Bano’s character, giving her a Maulvi father to emphasize her faith. Our intention was not to portray her as a trailblazer or a warrior woman.”
