Cultural Ties Between Tamil Nadu and South Korea

Recently released, the Tamil film Made in Korea, featuring Priyanka Mohan, has sparked considerable interest among audiences. Following its debut, viewers have begun to uncover intriguing connections between Tamil Nadu and South Korea. A notable historical link is Queen Shenbagam, who journeyed to Korea and became known as Queen Heo Hwang-ok after marrying King Suro. In a fascinating twist, Netflix India shared a video showcasing the South Korean cast discussing shared vocabulary between the two languages, revealing some remarkable similarities.


Language Similarities Highlighted by the Cast

In a special video, actors Ha-Ram Jo, Rok Kim, Si-Hun Baek, Jae-Hyeon Jang, and Sori Kim demonstrated how certain everyday words in Tamil and Korean are alike. They began with familial terms: 'mother' is amma in Tamil and eomma in Korean, while 'father' is appa in both languages. The word for 'sister-in-law' is anni in Tamil and eonni in Korean. Additionally, personal pronouns show striking resemblances; 'I' translates to naan in Tamil and na in Korean, while 'you' is nee in Tamil and neo in Korean. Other examples include 'come' as vaa in Tamil and wa in Korean, 'tooth' as pal in Tamil and ippal in Korean, and 'grass' as pull in Tamil and pul in Korean. To express 'a little bit', Tamil uses Konjam Konjam and Korean says Jogeum jogeum.

Produced by Rise East Entertainment, Made in Korea features Park Hye-jin from Squid Game in a key role as Yeon-ok, alongside Rishikanth, Thirunavukkarasu, Jenson Dhivakar, and Jaya. The film was shot over a 40-day period in South Korea, where Priyanka Mohan noted the weather varied significantly throughout the day. Viewers can enjoy the film in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam on Netflix. Furthermore, in the South Korean dubbed version, Pachinko star Kim Min-ha lends her voice to Priyanka Mohan's character, marking her debut in dubbing for an Indian film.
