Exploring the Anticipated Biopic 'Michael' and Its Journey
The Life of the King of Pop
The biopic 'Michael', featuring Jaafar Jackson, delves into the life of the iconic Michael Jackson. Released on April 24, this film is one of the most awaited biopics in recent memory, tracing the journey from his early days with the Jackson 5 in the 1960s to his solo career. Prior to Antoine Fuqua taking the helm, filmmaker Sandeep Reddy Vanga had ambitions to create a biopic about the music legend. Known for his work on 'Animal', 'Arjun Reddy', and 'Kabir Singh', Vanga had envisioned a project centered on Jackson, but it did not materialize for various reasons.
In a resurfaced interview, Vanga discussed the complexities involved in making a Michael Jackson biopic, including the creative, moral, and practical challenges. He noted that Jackson's life was rich with narratives suitable for a film, yet the question of casting remained a significant hurdle. Vanga remarked, "It is a very interesting life, you know, Michael Jackson's life right from his childhood, when he was singing in school, and how he changed his skin colour and all that, what he has been through, it’s a great journey, great story."
Vanga expressed that casting was a common dilemma faced by filmmakers considering a biopic. He questioned, "Who will play Michael Jackson? So that’s the question." The unique aura of Jackson, characterized by his physicality, movements, voice, and stage presence, posed a challenge for any actor stepping into his shoes. Vanga believed that if the right actor was found, it would be a "dream come true." Despite the challenges, he expressed his eagerness to watch any film about Jackson, stating, "whoever directs it, I’m going to buy the ticket and watch, because I want to know right."
While 'Michael' chooses to focus on Jackson's musical legacy and avoids the more controversial aspects of his later life, Vanga acknowledged that portraying these chapters honestly would be difficult. He explained, "you never know what is the right set and the wrong until something got proved," highlighting the complexities of Jackson's story.
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, 'Michael' successfully cast Jaafar Jackson, the nephew of the pop icon, in the lead role. The film also features Colman Domingo and Nia Long as his parents, Joseph and Katherine Jackson.
