Exploring Meta References in Welcome To The Jungle
Meta References in Welcome To The Jungle
The film Welcome To The Jungle is filled with clever meta references that audiences are likely to notice. From the reunion of Akshay Kumar and Raveena Tandon after two decades to nods towards Salman Khan’s Bajrangi Bhaijaan, director Ahmed Khan, along with writer Farhad Samji, has crafted a narrative that is both entertaining and nostalgic. The original story was penned by the late Neeraj Vora, while Farhad contributed to the screenplay. In a recent interview, Samji discussed the inclusion of Bajrangi Bhaijaan references, explaining that these elements were naturally integrated based on the casting choices.
Insights from Farhad Samji on the Reunion Scene
In an exclusive chat, Farhad shared, “Over the past few years, as social media has gained prominence, audiences have shown a fondness for references to classic films. We intentionally included such dialogues, although this particular scene wasn’t predetermined. Once we finalized the casting of Akshay and Raveena, I wrote the line, ‘20 saal se kahan the tum’ (Where have you been for the last 20 years?). This was meant for the audience to interpret.”
Farhad Samji Discusses the Bajrangi Bhaijaan Reference
He further elaborated, “The reference to Bajrangi Bhaijaan developed organically. We have incorporated similar elements in our previous works; it’s not a new concept. For instance, in Housefull 5, Jackie Shroff’s character says, ‘Choti bacchi hai kya?’ (Is she a little girl?). This is what audiences enjoy, and we aim to deliver what they request.”
Welcome To The Jungle marks the third installment in the Welcome series, with Akshay returning after a 19-year hiatus. The film premiered in theaters on June 26.
