Revival of Princess Diaries 3

Following the passing of filmmaker Garry Marshall, the third installment of the Princess Diaries series was put on hold. However, in 2024, the project saw a revival with Adele Lim at the helm and Anne Hathaway reprising her role as Princess Mia Thermopolis. Recently, Meg Cabot, the author of the original book series, provided an encouraging update, confirming that the film is still in the works. The only hurdle is coordinating with Hathaway's packed schedule, as she has five films set for release in 2026. Additionally, Cabot revealed that Chris Pine will also return to the franchise.

During her appearance at BookCon 2026 in New York City, Cabot expressed her excitement after reading the script, describing it as fantastic. She also mentioned that Robert Schwartzman, who portrayed Mia's first love Michael Moscovitz, alongside Chris Pine, who played Nicholas Devereaux in the sequel, will be back with Hathaway. Cabot stated, "There is a part for everybody. There's a thing that happens that everybody has to show up." While Hathaway's return is confirmed, Julie Andrews, who plays Mia's grandmother, Queen Clarisse Renaldi, has yet to be officially announced for the film. Additionally, Mandy Moore and Heather Matarazzo, both of whom have been part of the franchise, are anticipated to return.

Production Delays and Future Projects

The delay in filming is primarily due to Hathaway's busy schedule, as she is currently promoting her films, Mother Mary and The Devil Wears Prada 2. Cabot humorously remarked that eventually, Hathaway would find time to visit the castle rented for the movie. She expressed her eagerness to attend the premiere of the third installment, thanking fans for their support of Genovia, the fictional country she created.
